Learn from me in these data courses!

Hi there :)

In the upcoming months, I will be teaching a handful of data analysis and data visualization courses online: Kickstart your data journalism and Make great data visualization. Details and how to register are below! And if you know anybody else who might like to join please share this email with them.

Kickstart your data journalism

With Arena and my dear colleague Jonathan Stoneman I will be teaching a series for the very beginners to get a taste of what working with data is like.

The dates are:

  • Monday 17 March 2025 / 17:30 CET: Excel – The starting point for any aspiring data journalist. Learn to explore your data by sorting, filtering and doing pivot tables.

  • Thursday 3 April 2025 / 16:30 CET: Google Sheets – Still spreadsheets, but a bit different. We recap everything above and add some extra nifty tricks to up your data analysis game.

  • Monday 14 April 2025 / 16:30 CET:  R – Want to move beyond spreadsheets? R is a programming language designed for statistical analysis that can save you from the hassle of repetitive tasks and the headache of hunting for errors in your analysis.

  • May 8 Thu 2025 / 17:30 CET: Python – Python is your other option for data analysisβ€”on steroids! Come and see which flavour you prefer!

Make great data visualizations

I have given this workshop a couple of times and it’s always great fun. Creating data visualizations is not only about the tools we use! To convey the message clearly, we need adapt a new way of thinking.

This workshop will help you understand how to use text, shapes, colours and emphasis to turn tables into crisp and crystal clear information bites.

The only things you need is some time, a bit of money, a piece of paper and a handful of colored pencils. πŸ–οΈ

This workshop is for:

  • Reporters or data analysts struggling to turn their Excel findings into clear visual messages

  • Editors that would like to learn how to assess whether a chart effectively conveys a message

  • Designers skilled at aesthetics but challenged when it comes to creating a clear narrative with data

The workshop takes 1.5 to 2-hours and includes practical, hands-on exercises and a Q&A session. Familiarity with Excel is helpful but not essential!
